Mechanical & HVAC Design in Ontario

Heating, cooling, ventilation and plumbing design coordinated around the building and the people using it.

Mechanical floor plan showing HVAC duct routing, supply outlets, furnace and ventilation equipment

JSR Engineering provides mechanical design for houses, additions and light commercial spaces throughout Ontario. Our work connects equipment sizing, air distribution, outdoor air and plumbing layouts with the architectural design so the systems can be considered together.

Residential HVAC design & load calculations

Heating and cooling requirements vary with the building envelope, room arrangement and exposure. Load calculations inform equipment selection and distribution layouts. We prepare residential HVAC designs for new work and alterations, including additions where the existing system and proposed rooms need to be considered together.

Commercial ventilation & tenant improvements

An office or retail renovation can change how a space is occupied and ventilated. We develop HVAC and ventilation layouts for the proposed use, considering outdoor air, exhaust and equipment requirements. Ventilation design is coordinated with ceiling layouts and the routes available in the existing building.

HRV, ERV & plumbing coordination

Heat recovery and energy recovery ventilation systems can form part of the fresh air strategy. Their arrangement needs to work with supply air, exhaust and available space. Plumbing layouts are developed alongside the building plans to coordinate fixtures, piping routes and other selected systems.

HVAC design for existing buildings

A renovation can change room sizes, occupancy and the heating or cooling demand of an existing building. Mechanical design connects these changes to equipment selection, air distribution and ventilation. A larger unit alone does not resolve an undersized duct route or a lack of outdoor air. The design needs to consider how the complete system will operate within the available building space.

Frequently asked questions

Does a mini split system provide fresh air ventilation?

Heating and cooling and outdoor air ventilation are separate design considerations. A mini split selection should be coordinated with a ventilation strategy appropriate to the building and its use.

When should HVAC design be coordinated with the floor plan?

Mechanical layouts are most useful while room arrangements and ceiling spaces are being developed. This allows duct routes, equipment locations and ventilation provisions to be considered alongside the building design, before conflicts become changes during construction.
